About SDG 14: Life Below Water

SDG 14 aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. With over 70% of the Earth’s surface covered by oceans, these vast bodies of water play a crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate, providing food and livelihoods for millions of people, and supporting biodiversity.

Key Targets of SDG 14

  1. Conserve and sustainably use marine resources: Protect marine and coastal ecosystems from degradation, overfishing, and pollution. Promote sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation efforts to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
  2. Reduce marine pollution: Take action to prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution, including plastic pollution, nutrient runoff, and oil spills. Implement measures to improve waste management and reduce the amount of plastic entering our oceans.
  3. Protect marine biodiversity: Conserve and restore marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds. Promote the sustainable management of marine protected areas to safeguard biodiversity and ecosystem services.
  4. Enhance ocean resilience: Strengthen the resilience of coastal communities and marine ecosystems to the impacts of climate change, including sea-level rise, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events. Implement adaptation measures to mitigate the effects of climate change on marine environments.
